Social Housing Projects

Since being appointed by the Government as a "Framework Supplier" under the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) Phase 2 grant scheme, we have established ourselves as a leading provider of solar energy systems for social and affordable housing.

SML partner companies have worked with over 60 Housing Associations and Local Authorities in providing solar energy systems for social housing. Solar water heating is the most common system for these projects due to the suitability of the technology in providing a cost effective, efficient and easily installed solution to meet the needs of both landlords and tenants. However, solar PV systems can also provide an excellent solution for all types of housing, particularly where the aim is to reduce carbon emissions as much as possible.

50% Grants on Solar Water Heating

Housing Associations, RSLs and other social housing providers qualify for grants of up to 50% of the total cost on SML's solar water heating systems under the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) Phase 2 scheme. Grant funding is applied to both the cost of equipment - including solar panels, hot water cylinders, controls and system connections - as well as the cost of installation.

Ideal Solution for Social Housing

Our solar water heating systems provide a cost effective and efficient technology to enable residents to cut their carbon emissions whilst significantly reducing their energy bills. For both new and existing housing stock, solar water heating has proven to be one of the most cost effective and easily installed renewable energy technologies available.
  • New-Build: From 2008 onwards, all new-build social housing is required to meet Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes (meaning a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions). SML's solar water heating systems offer an effective, low cost route to achieving this target without imposing significant design constraints on the overall build.

  • Existing: Solar water heating also offers an excellent solution for retrofit into older properties. Causing minimal disruption to the existing infrastructure, systems can be installed either as part of a wider refurbishment programme such as Decent Homes, or even when properties are under occupancy.

Maintenance and Aftercare Support

In addition to our standard warranties, we offer a comprehensive aftercare support package to our social housing partners. This includes training support to enable maintenance teams to conduct annual checks, fault diagnosis and routine maintenance tasks.
